Serena Williams
The Winners Collection
Tel Aviv, July 2021
Acrylic on Canvas [100cm x 100cm]
The character is painted on shredded newspaper articles collected over many weeks from an archive, paying homage to major events in her career.
Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of our time, but to win 23 grand slams she has had to overcome obstacles most tennis players have not: she is a black woman in a predominantly white sport, she grew up in a poor neighborhood practicing on public courts that were not always safe, and had to endure intense scrutiny of her body, racism and misogyny. In spite of those obstacles, she developed into an internationally renowned athlete and role model. Since the very beginning of her career, Williams has embodied the grit, resilience and mental toughness required to overcome every hurdle and hardship she has had to face, inspiring athletes around the world.
